THE IMPACT OF HEARING LOSS

Hearing loss is abnormal or reduced hearing sensitivity. Hearing impairment is a descriptor for individual with any degree of hearing loss. This impairment is considered a hidden handicap.

When there is a barrier in communication, the negative impact on individual’s ability to communicate effectively is evident, thus compromising the emotional, behavioral, educational, socio-economic status and quality of life in general.

 

HOW DOES HEARING LOSS OCCUR?
Hearing loss develops when there is a problem with one or more parts of the hearing system. Most often hearing loss develops gradually and painlessly. It can be caused by:

The natural aging process
Exposure to loud or constant noise
Inherited medical condition
Traumatic injury
Ototoxic medication
Tumors
Illness

Hearing loss education    
Hearing loss is more common than you might think. Interestingly, due to recreational and environmental noise, hearing loss is occurring at younger and younger ages.

Hearing Loss Facts:

Hearing loss is second only to arthritis as the most common issue for older adults
Only about 10% of hearing losses are helped by surgery or other medical treatment
90% of hearing losses can be treated with the use of hearing instruments
